Sungevity Names Social Media Leader Patrick Crane as Chief Marketing Officer

OAKLAND, Calif. Feb. 23, 2011 Patrick Crane

Crane, who most recently served as LinkedIn's Chief Marketing Officer, will look to develop ways to make the peer-to-peer connection between Sungevity and its customers more robust. This includes developing web and smart phone applications that will enhance the customer experience of going solar.

Crane's hire signals Sungevity's intention to spread its unique solar installation process through social networks and its broader "online sunshine" approach to delivering solar energy. The company sees this form of communication as an effective means to convince potential customers to make the switch from dirty fossil fuel energy to clean, cost-effective solar power.

At LinkedIn, Crane helped the company emerge as one of top three social networking platforms in the world. He founded the marketing group and helped develop the company's go-to-market strategy and its brand to the position it enjoys today as the largest professional network in the world.

"We are excited to have someone with Patrick's track-record of success building social networks," said Kennedy. "He is the right person to help us spread Sungevity's easy, online process for going solar."

"Sungevity allows customers to create a social network around going solar," said Crane. "When you become a Sungevity customer, like I did, you also become an ambassador for solar energy, and an active advocate for Sungevity's service. As Sungevity continues to grow, its customers will become part of a passionate onli

Plan Hosts Empowering Girls: Education and Technology at 55th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women

NEW YORK Feb. 23, 2011

Linda Raftree

"Girls still face access barriers and those of us who work with new technologies need to be aware of who is being left out when we propose using them in our work. Income levels, language, literacy, education, customs and gender discrimination are barriers that girls face when trying to access any kind of opportunity, new technology included."

Because I am a Girl Report: Digital and Urban Frontiers

Focusing on two of the 21st century's fastest growing areas -- the boom in city populations and the explosion of IT and communication technology -- the report examines the prospects and perils facing girls. While there are great opportunities, prejudice and poverty exclude millions of girls from taking advantage of all that technology can offer.

Raftree was joined by Fabiola, 17, a girl delegate from Plan Cameroon, who spoke on her experiences with information technology and girls' rights. "I will say girls are full citizens. We are not simply mothers of tomorrow but leaders of future generations and members of our society.  Girls should be given equal rights and opportunities to be engaged in science and technology just like the boys.

Broadcom Fuels 10GbE Adoption with World’s First Dual-Port 10GBASE-T Adapter with Full Offload

SANTA CLARA, Calif. Feb. 23, 2011 Ethernet Technology Summit --

January 2011

Santa Clara, Calif.

Highlights/Key Facts

  • By combining its in-house MAC and PHY components, Broadcom has become the first and only company in the industry to deliver a seamlessly integrated, industry-proven, fully-offloaded 10GBASE-T solution – from a single vendor.
  • 10GBASE-T paves the way for mitigating 10GbE deployment costs, and will replace more expensive fiber cables and optical transceivers required by SFP+ solutions. Operating at Gigabit speeds for backward compatibility is a key advantage of 10GBASE-T, delivering a common physical interface that provides full spec compliance and interoperability at 10GbE, while providing a seamless interface to existing infrastructure.
  • High performance adapter delivers bi-directional line rate throughput across both ports, and over 1Million iSCSI IOPS.
    • The turnkey adapter operates at 100 meters over CAT6a unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cables. The adapter's 10GBASE-T PHY uses a highly advanced digital signal processor (DSP) based architecture that allows robust operation over UTP wiring.  UTP enables the use of structured cabling, a key advantage in delivering the lowest total cost solution within the Data Center.
    • The innovative offload architecture minimizes CPU overhead eliminating competition for host resources while freeing valuable CPU cycles for processing user applications.
    • The iSCSI operation is offloaded and accelerate

By reinvesting in HBCUs, the nation will have a better chance to thrive and to prosper.  The UNCF Faith Campaign urges church leaders to help UNCF raise the resources that students need to pay the costs of going to college and that UNCF member-HBCUs need to give young men and women the education they need and deserve.

ATA Supports Proposed Ban on Hand-Held Phone Use by Drivers

ARLINGTON, Va. Feb. 23, 2011

Bill Graves

Feb. 22

However, while ATA agreed with FMCSA that "drivers should be prohibited from dialing a telephone number while driving," it urged the agency not to limit drivers from pushing "a limited number of buttons in order to initiate a hands-free call."

ATA also objected to the proposed prohibition on reaching for a mobile phone while driving. Doing so, ATA argued, would prevent drivers from initiating hands-free calls which, as the agency's research demonstrates, can have a net safety benefit. Further, ATA claimed, it is inconsistent to permit drivers to reach for other objects (e.g., a C.B., a radio dial) but prohibit reaching for a cell phone.
