RSR Research’s latest report, “The 21st Century Store Manager” finds that that though retailers understand the need to give their store managers more power to contend with increasingly educated and sophisticated consumers, they have much work to do in order to make this vision a reality. As is usual, the best performers – Retail Winners – are already leaps and bounds ahead.
These findings are based on a survey of 61 qualified retailers in the autumn of 2011. The report can be downloaded at http://www.retailsystemsresearch.com/_document/summary/1365. The report is sponsored by Reflexis.
“Consumer dissatisfaction has reached epic proportions,” said Brian Kilcourse, Managing Partner at RSR Research and co-author of the report. “This is driven by both money and time pressures in people’s lives, and by the ready availability of powerful information at consumers’ fingertips anytime anywhere via smart mobile devices. It has put huge pressure on store employees and the store manager in particular, since consumers expect the retailer to be at least as informed about products and services as they are.”
“Retailers get it,” adds Steve Rowen, the report’s co-author. “They understand that most store managers are being asked to bring a knife to gun fight. What is problematic is how little they’ve invested so far in the types of technologies that would give the store manager a fighting chance. The best performers are moving much more quickly to get tools into the store manager’s hands to free him or her from a desk in the back room, and back out onto the sales floor where they belong.”
“The 21st Century Store Manager” contains analysis of the business drivers, opportunities, and organizational constraints surrounding exciting new ways to empower retail store managers. It also offers up baseline recommendations for successful strategies, and is part of RSR Research’s ongoing efforts to provide market intelligence on retail technology trends, and can be downloaded here: http://www.retailsystemsresearch.com/_document/summary/1365
