SAN JOSE, Calif. Feb. 1, 2011 Turkey
The games feature Winter sports competitions such as ice hockey, alpine skiing and figure skating, with more than 2,700 student-athletes and officials from 58 countries. Recognizing the technology challenges of this event, Turkish system integrator TELCONET recommended and deployed Force10 1/10 GbE C-Series and S-Series switches to serve as the network backbone for an IT infrastructure built to provide Internet and broadcast services for participants and spectators at the various facilities in the Erzurum area.
"The IT infrastructure, especially the network in particular, plays a behind-the-scenes, yet critical component of the overall experience of the Winter Universiade for its spectators, advertisers and athletes," said Cihan Gursun, project coordinator, TELCONET. "We chose Force10 Networks because they offered a core-to-edge network solution that could be deployed quickly and easily and bring robust performance with other features conducive for all of the venues."
Core-to-Edge Performance and Latency Required to Support Distributed Venues
To power the IT infrastructure and help ensure smooth technical operations during the games, the C-Series switches provide up to 384 line-rate 10/100/1000Base-T in a 13-RU chassis with 5 microsecond switching latency under full load for 64 byte frames. Additionally, IT officials with the Winter Universiade games required PoE support for VoIP phones and wireless Internet access needed at the venues. The C-Series offers full 15.4 W Class 3 PoE support, while the S-Series access switches also provide PoE support in addition to its 10 GbE performance.
