Avast! 6.0 detects new and emerging threats more quickly than ever, without bloated applications or false positive alerts slowing users down. New features such as AutoSandbox, WebRep, and SafeZone are fully integrated with the avast! 6.0 antivirus engine to give users an enhanced security package. Despite these new protective features, the size of the installer for all three versions – avast! Free Antivirus, the paid-for avast! Pro, and the premium avast! Internet Security suite – has been reduced by 20 percent.
“With the new avast! 6.0, we’ve taken one of the best products already on the market – both for the free and premium versions – and added more capabilities in an easy-to-use, accessible package. This is another step in our strategy to place more safety features into our avast! Free Antivirus,” said Vince Steckler, CEO of AVAST Software. “With over 120 million active users of avast! software around the globe, we’ve gotten a lot of feedback about current threats and what our users want in their antivirus protection.”
Major features now available in the new avast! 6.0 include:
• AutoSandbox – The first virtualization feature offered in a free antivirus package.
“Identifying malware is not always a clear yes or no. But with AutoSandbox, our users are now in a win-win situation,” stated Ondrej Vlcek, CTO of AVAST Software. AutoSandbox automatically identifies suspicious applications and prompts users to run them in a safe virtual environment. Users have three options: execute the file within the virtual AutoSandbox, run it outside the sandbox, or cancel running the application entirely. “If the item is dangerous, the virtual computer is shut down and the user’s real machine remains safe. And, if the item is safe, there is no hassle from a false positive,” added Mr. Vlcek.
• WebRep – The first reputation guide for malware and website content incorporated into a free antivirus application.
“WebRep combines CommunityIQ data on infected websites with user-submitted information on the content and reputation of individual sites,” said Mr. Vlcek. “Thanks to the millions of avast! users, our WebRep has the deepest support of any web reputation option on the market.” The WebRep plug-in is installed alongside the new avast! 6.0 and interfaces directly with search engine results.
• SafeZone – New virtual desktop for safe online banking and shopping – even with an infected computer.
“We’ve long focused on keeping malware from getting into our users’ machines. Now we can also keep malware from taking any information out,” said Mr. Vlcek. With SafeZone, users can create a single-use virtual desktop that blocks out invasive data-stealing malware such as keyloggers – even if their machine is already infected. SafeZone is available only in the paid-for avast! Pro Antivirus and the premium avast! Internet Security suite.
• Behavior Shield – Expanded role in spotting suspect files for testing in the AutoSandbox.
“We can now identify a wider range of ambiguous cases without fear of triggering a false positive,” explained Mr. Vlcek. “We are getting over 12,000 unique samples sent daily to the Virus Lab, which enable us to fine-tune our detection abilities.” The avast! 6.0 Behavior Shield has been strengthened to better spot polymorphic and other malware families that are difficult to spot with traditional virus database identification.
• More internet security features – Additional capabilities added to avast! 6.0 Free Antivirus.
“As 85 percent of malware is now transmitted through the internet, we’ve extended our protective features for this vector to all avast! users,” remarked Mr. Steckler. “People just need protection and many only want to know that their antivirus has protected them – they don’t care how.” With both the Web and the Script Shields available, avast! users are defended against malware at both the http level and the browser level. Site Blocking, now also part of avast! Free Antivirus, allows users to block selected websites with the specific URL or by creating URL masks with “*” and “?” wildcards.
“Put these new features together and avast! is again setting the standard for what an antivirus software should provide,” said Mr. Steckler. “With the new avast! 6.0 Free Antivirus, we are again providing a free antivirus that equals or exceeds the protection offered by other paid-for products.”
