“We first set out to determine reach by examining the number of followers and buzz an individual has on sites like Twitter and Google. We then needed to determine how much impact an individual had with their followers and subscribers. We asked questions like: How often were they retweeted? How much buzz is created around their blog posts, tweets, and other messages? How often is the individual referenced in the blogosphere? Were they cited by influential people?”
Kissane was ranked #38 on the list, which included Linux chief architect Linus Torvalds, O’Reilly media founder Tim O’Reilly, Google executive Chris Messina, and ex-Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz. A fervent evangelist of Linux and open source software since 1995, Kissane attributes his inclusion alongside such software luminaries to his ceaseless advocacy of the free and open source philosophy, particularly as embodied by GNU/Linux.
“Linux is gaining ground every day, especially in the netbook and mobile device markets. It’s already the standard for server operating systems. But most people don’t know what they can gain by using such a powerful, stable and secure system on their home and small office computers. The cost, free for download, is an extra benefit,” says Kissane, owner of Timbury Computer Services, based in Toms River, NJ.
Kissane blogs sporadically (http://timkissane.com) but, through his Twitter ( @timbury ) and other social media accounts, he offers news, advice and support for people seeking to explore the world of open source. “I’ve often felt like a lone voice, crying in the dark. I’m honored and surprised to be included alongside people I consider heroes.” Referring to Tux, the mascot of Linux, Kissane concludes, “I guess you can’t keep a loud penguin down.”
