An internal study carried out by the software developer UpdateStar reveals that over 90% of PC users are not downloading security-related software updates available for their existing programs in time. The study also concludes that, on average, PC Software is out-of-date after just 5 days. Berlin, July 17, 2009 – UpdateStar, the Berlin-based software developer and leading provider of software information and updates, has carried out an internal study into how up to date software installations are, based on anonymous user statistics. They used a data sample from their own Analytics service which contained 150,000 scan results from software installations on user PCs that have a worldwide distribution.
The users deployed for the first time the software product UpdateStar during the months of May and June, 2009 to search for available updates to the software on their PCs. They searched for updates through data contained in the UpdateStar Database, which delivers versions, updates and information on more than 259,000 software products.
Results of the data sample
In total, the users from the data sample checked over 12 million program installations. On average, the first search produced a total of 14 available Updates for the software they were using on their PC. The highest negative result from the study was for a PC where 50 updates for the installed software were available. 90% of the scan results also brought up at least one security-related update. These available updates often stood idle for weeks or months at a time, with the user either being unaware of their existence or simply not installing them.
In addition to this study, 15,551 users took part in an online survey on the UpdateStar website into their experiences with software Updates. The results of this survey matched those from the internal study. They also showed that users often only find out about available updates to their software by chance. They named their main sources as online and print media.
Furthermore, the Analytics data evaluated after repeated scans using UpdateStar revealed that the software setup of an average PC, not taking into account Windows own updates, is out-of-date after just 5 days. Only one in ten of the users out of the data sample had a PC where no security-related updates were left outstanding.
Recommendations for software care
The almost daily appearing security gaps in software, and subsequent updates and patches from publishers, simply confirm that keeping software up to date is crucial in avoiding the very real dangers posed by out of date programs.
• Always use current Antimalware, Antivirus and Antispyware Software
• Regularly check how up to date installed programs are
• Only use trustworthy sources for software and downloads
Whether by using UpdateStar products or competing products, the UpdateStar team recommends that users regularly check their PC software for available updates. This must not be on a daily basis, but updates relating to security of software should certainly be installed promptly upon their release, in order to protect the PC.
