This V.42bis data compression software implements ITU-T V.42bis recommendation. By using a variable length code to represent fixed length characters, the most commonly transmitted characters are compressed and represented by a codeword much smaller than the conventional bit code. The V.42bis data compression modem software protocol increases the throughput by compressing certain types of data. GAO’s V.42bis compression software protocol provides codeword sizes from 512 bytes up to 2048 bytes that are selected depending upon the resources available. It can be used with V.42 error correction protocol or as standalone compression software. APIs are accordingly provided. In addition, the system uses a dictionary, which has a hierarchical tree structure, to store frequently occurring character strings, along with a code to represent these character strings.
This V.42bis data compression software belongs to GAO’s family of Soft Modems. Other products in the family are V.34 Modem Software which has a maximum bit rate of 33.6 kbps, and V.32 bis/V.32 Modem Software which is designed to process data in 10 ms intervals. The family also includes V.44 Data Compression Software, V.90 modem software and V.42 Error Correction Protocol. The line of products provides the most comprehensive and unique suite of modem, fax, telephony, speech software, VoIP, FoIP, fax relay and fax/modem/voice relay software for embedded applications for DSP and microprocessors.
