Molly advises a Wal-Mart cashier to take advantage of the chain’s IT opportunities.
Dear Molly: I work as a cashier at Wal-Mart and I recently passed my A+ exam. What’s my next step?
Molly says: Have you checked the job board in the employee area for computer jobs? There are also a lot of IT-related jobs on the company’s Web site. Start your IT job search where you’re working now and don’t overlook any job in the organization that requires computer skills. You’re already working for a major, nationwide employer that needs computer-savvy people. You could be one of them.
Then there is Walmart.com, a new and independent organization in the pre-IPO stage owned by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., the employees of Walmart.com, and Accel Partners, a venture capital firm. I checked the jobs section of the Web site and the organization is looking for IT people.
Don’t overlook the other major superstore chains. You’ve got experience you can build on. See what you can do by switching into IT with your current employer, but also check out the IT job openings at the competition and keep working on building your skill base.
