Walmart, foodtweeksTM Step in to Support Utah Food Bank During Hunger Action Month's Food Drive

Salt Lake City, CT, September 25, 2014 –(PR.com)– The upcoming statewide Hunger Action Month Food Drive will be held on Saturday, September 27th from 9 AM to 1 PM, with Walmart stores across the state serving as drop-off locations. Food can also be donated at any of Utah Food Bank’s 130 partner agencies and local food pantries across the state or at Utah Food Bank’s warehouse at 3150 S. 900 W. in Salt Lake. Utah Food Bank is requesting that the public donate non-perishable, nutritious food items, especially those low in sodium and sugar.

In September, Feeding America’s nationwide network of food banks (of which Utah Food Bank is a member) unites to urge individuals to take action in their communities. The goal of national Hunger Action Month is to mobilize the public to act on behalf of those in need. It creates a movement throughout September that has a real and lasting impact on Utah Food Bank’s mission of Fighting Hunger Statewide.

Approximately 472,000 Utahns are unsure where their next meal will come from, and 1 in 5 Utah children are at risk of missing a meal today due to lack of resources. September is a crucial time for donations to ensure that Utahns of all ages have enough food to get through the challenging winter months.

Another great way to support Utah Food Bank’s efforts is to download a great new free app called foodtweeks™, which allows users to cut calories from their everyday foods in an easy, enjoyable way to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors – each calorie cut generates a donation to food banks. When an app user downloads the app and uses the “UFB” code to double donations to Utah Food Bank, foodtweeks™ will then double it again in support of Hunger Action Month, making every tweek 4 times more powerful. Consumers who donate on September 27th and download the app will be entered into an opportunity drawing for one $500 gift card to Walmart. Can’t make it out that day? You can still help Utah Food Bank by voting for them to win $60,000 from Walmart at http://wm8.walmart.com/Hunger/#/#fh-search-input. You can vote for them every day through 10/5.

“Utah Food Bank is calling on the public to support the Hunger Action Month Food Drive, and we are incredibly grateful to all of those who join in the effort,” said Ginette Bott, Chief Development Officer for Utah Food Bank. “We encourage businesses, church groups, schools, individuals and families to organize food drives in their communities and bring the donations they collect to one of our many convenient drop-off sites on September 27th.” For more details about the many ways you can get involved in Hunger Action Month, including a list of Hunger Action Month Food Drive drop-off locations, please visit www.utahfoodbank.org/hungeractionmonth.
