Censorship is here; free speech is a thing of the past.
I recently awoke in tears from a dream in which I was performing a song called “Patriotism Blues.” I quickly wrote down the lyrics and plan to find someone who wants to perform it with me. As the title suggests, the song is about the struggles of being a U.S. patriot these days. Some of the verses relate to 9/11 and the liberty-threatening laws that have been passed since that awful day or are in the works. Some of the verses relate to the impending war and its effects on the economy. Some of the verses were lamentations of other events that cause us to fly our flags at half staff, including the crashes of Paul Wellstone’s campaign plane and the Space Shuttle Columbia. And one verse in particular whaled on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and its effects to censor any communication remotely related to anticopying technology.
